Governor Mugabowagahunde Urges Residents to Avoid Substandard Alcoholic Beverages

On 20 October 2026, Northern Province Governor Mugabowagahunde Maurice, accompanied by representatives of the provincial security organs, joined residents of Kidomo Cell in Kamubuga Sector, Gakenke District, and Nyanamo Cell in Rugengabari Sector, Burera District, for a community assembly.

The meeting was also attended by the Mayors of Gakenke and Burera Districts, security officials, and other local leaders from both districts.

Addressing the residents, Governor Mugabowagahunde urged them to refrain from producing, selling, and consuming substandard alcoholic beverages, including Kanyanga and other illicitly produced alcoholic drinks. He explained that these beverages pose serious health risks, potentially causing liver, kidney, and heart diseases, as well as death.

He called on residents to abandon the production, sale, and consumption of such beverages and encouraged them to report individuals involved in these illegal activities to the relevant authorities so that appropriate measures can be taken to protect public health.

The Governor also encouraged residents to participate in the local elections scheduled for 24 October 2026 and to engage in activities that promote their social and economic development.

The meeting further highlighted the importance of making effective use of arable land and cultivating all available agricultural land to increase food production, improve household livelihoods, and promote sustainable development.

At the end of the discussions, residents were given an opportunity to share their views, concerns, and suggestions, which were addressed or referred to the relevant authorities for appropriate follow-up.
