Governor Mugabowagahunde Urges Gakenke Youth to Avoid Drugs and Harmful Behaviours
Northern Province Governor Mugabowagahunde Maurice has urged young people in Gakenke District to avoid drug abuse, illicit alcohol and other harmful behaviours, encouraging them to focus on education, discipline and activities that can help them build a better future.
The Governor made the remarks on Friday afternoon during a youth and community event held at Gakenke Centre in Gakenke Sector. The event was organised as part of a campaign aimed at encouraging young people to uphold Rwandan cultural values and avoid behaviours that could negatively affect their future.
Addressing the youth, Governor Mugabowagahunde highlighted the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse, noting that such behaviours can prevent young people from taking advantage of education, employment and other opportunities.
“Some young people spend the night drinking, while others wake up and go to work. You cannot even get out of bed because of a hangover. While others are moving forward, you are taking three steps backwards,” he said.
He called on young people to make responsible choices, maintain appropriate conduct and appearance, and remain committed to their education and personal development.
The event brought together members of the Gakenke District Executive Committee, security officials, young people, community members and development partners.
Artists including Danny Vumbi, Elina, poet Ange and comedian Jorijiwi Rwanda used music, poetry and comedy to deliver messages on positive behaviour, cultural values, school attendance and the prevention of drug abuse.
The event was part of Gakenke District’s “Urubyiruko Twifuza” campaign, which focuses on engaging young people on Rwandan cultural values, positive behaviour and the prevention of substance abuse.
The campaign follows a similar event held in Mugunga Sector the previous weekend. According to the organisers, additional events are scheduled to take place in Ruli and Muyongwe sectors as the campaign continues.
