Gakenke Showcases Best Practices in Social Welfare Programme Implementation to Bugesera Delegation
On 30 July 2026, the Mayor of Gakenke District, Mukandayisenga Vestine, received the Social Affairs Committee of the Bugesera District Council, which was on a study visit aimed at exchanging best practices in the implementation of programmes that improve community welfare.
During the discussions, Gakenke District presented its strategies for increasing enrollment in Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI), promoting long-term savings through the Ejo Heza scheme, and addressing key social welfare challenges affecting vulnerable households. The delegation was also briefed on the role of community savings groups in fostering a culture of saving and supporting sustainable, community-led solutions to social and economic challenges.
Following the meeting with the district leadership, the Bugesera District Council's Social Affairs Committee continued its study tour in Kagoma Cell, Gakenke Sector, accompanied by Gakenke District officials and members of Gakenke District Council's Social Affairs Committee.
The delegation visited community savings and lending groups, where members shared how collective savings initiatives have contributed to increased participation in the Ejo Heza long-term savings programme and Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI), strengthening household resilience and improving the overall well-being of residents.
The study visit also took the delegation to Cyintare Cell in Kivuruga Sector, where they visited the home of Mukanzasaba Justine, whose family recently received a newly constructed house after living in a severely dilapidated dwelling.
The house was built through a partnership between Gakenke District and the ADEPR Church, Musanze Region, demonstrating the impact of collaboration between local government and faith-based organizations in improving living conditions for vulnerable families.
The visit concluded with the Bugesera delegation commending Gakenke's community-centred social welfare initiatives and expressing their commitment to adapting relevant best practices to strengthen social development programmes in Bugesera District.
