Gakenke District Highlights Achievements of the District Council, 2021–2026

On 11 September 2026, Gakenke District presented to residents the achievements of its District Council during the 2021–2026 five-year term, highlighting progress in economic development, social welfare and good governance.

The event brought together members of the District Executive Committee, District Council members, a representative of the Ministry of Local Government, the Executive Secretary of the Northern Province and other invited guests. The Chief Guest and Patron of Gakenke District was the Minister of Public Service and Labour, J. Uwizeye.

During the five-year term, the District Council monitored key development programmes in agriculture and livestock, roads and bridges, access to clean water and electricity, education and healthcare, as well as citizen participation and service delivery.

District Council President Télésphore Mugwiza said the Council had focused on strengthening oversight of development programmes, particularly infrastructure, education and healthcare initiatives.

Gakenke District Mayor Vestine Mukandayisenga noted that some projects initiated during the term remain ongoing and will require continued attention, including the construction of Gakenke Bus Terminal and the improvement of roads and bridges.

Minister J. Uwizeye commended the District Council for its work during the five-year term and called for continued efforts to address remaining challenges and make effective use of available opportunities to further accelerate development in Gakenke.
