Gakenke: Local Government Leaders Strengthened on Planned Development and Effective Land Use

On 18 August 2026 Gakenke District conducted a capacity-building training for local government leaders and staff aimed at strengthening their understanding and effective application of the Land Use Master Plan, with a focus on promoting well-planned settlements, orderly construction, and sustainable land use in line with the District’s development priorities.

The training was organized in partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) and technical experts in urban planning and valuation. It was officially opened by the Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, following a meeting with the facilitators at his office, where discussions focused on the role of District leadership in effectively implementing and applying the Land Use Master Plan.

The discussions emphasized the importance of making land-use and development decisions based on approved planning frameworks. This approach is essential to preventing unplanned development and ensuring that land is used efficiently, while supporting sustainable growth and the long-term development of the District.

During the training, participants strengthened their knowledge of how to interpret and apply the Land Use Master Plan, identify areas designated for different land-use functions, and improve the delivery of land-use and construction-related services to citizens.

The training is particularly important given the role of the Gakenke Land Use Master Plan in guiding the allocation and management of land for different purposes, including agriculture, forestry, settlements, transport, commercial activities, industries, and other development functions.

Gakenke District leadership emphasizes that effective implementation of the Master Plan will contribute to well-planned settlements, modern and orderly construction, properly planned infrastructure, and more productive and sustainable use of land, ultimately increasing its contribution to the District’s socio-economic development.
