The principle crops grown in Gakenke District include coffee which is grown on 1,028ha with a production capacity of 4,127.781 tones, pineapple grown on 745ha with 38,756 tones worth of harvest annually, maracuja which is practiced on 442.6ha producing 4,585 tones, and silk grown on 21ha producing 649kg of silk. The District also grows pool 9A and hybrid maize on 642ha producing 3,210 tones, beans grown on 2,850ha producing 5,700 tones, and cassava cultivated on 75ha producing 1,875 tones.Livestock farming has increased tremendously in the District. The President’s project of one cow per family distributed 203 cows, 607 cows were inseminated, and 1,984 cows were provided in the community development programme commonly known as "Ubudehe" making a total of 2,794 cows in the district. In order to improve the one cow per family project insemination centers are planned to be established, livestock farming projects have been forwarded to financial institutions to be able to acquire loans to fund them, PAPSTA will provide 67 cows.Gakenke District with the help development partners have put in place measures to reduce soil erosion by constructing 6,251.25ha of both radical and natural terraces. This endeavor was supported by the participation of TIG, HIMO, PAM, Umuganda, World Vision, PAIGELAC, PAPSTA and the population.The District is also improving in timber having revived 48ha of old and neglected forests and established seedbeds that contain about 3,539,000 trees. The projected plan for the forests in the district has been designed and is to be soon implemented. |
