Local community prepared a field for the construction of a nursery school
On January 12th, 2012 community works known as “Umuganda” was done in Mucaca Cell, Nemba Sector in Gakenke District where local community prepared a field for the Nursery School to be constructed

As it was signed in his last year Plan of action, the SSF-HIV/MIGEPROF project, apart the activity of supporting OVC students in secondary schools, has also to support materially the OVC in primary Schools. The beneficiaries of that support in GAKENKE District are 799 OVC from three administrative sectors such as RUSHASHI, KARAMBO and NEMBA. Professionalism in schools to be emphasized
The government of Rwanda has an objective of promoting education by employing professional and experienced teachers. Gakenke district is planning to replace teachers who didn’t study education with qualified teachers and according to the subjects they studied.
Hakizimana Jean Bosco, the official in charge of education in Gakenke district said that they already have about 100 qualified teachers who will replace about 93 teachers who teach in primary schools. readmore

Hygien and sanitation week ceremonies
This week was organized by Gakenke District in order to sensitize people on hygien and sanitation issues. The term of this week was Banyagakenke Duharanire kugira isuku muri byose kuko ari isoko y’ubuzima.
Before the official lunching of this week, there was many activities done in Gakenke commercial center where Gakenke District Autorities make umuganda with community health worker from Nemba hospital, Gakenke sector authorities, civil society, army, police, the District staff in charge of Health, staff of Nemba hospital and other local habitants of Gakenke District,
They make hygien and sanitation in different areas, plant about 800 trees and other activities,
After the work, people were grouped and get some informations about hygien and saniation, some activities planned during this week like hygien inspection in all households of Gakenke District and this will be done by community health workers in collaboration with local authorities at all levels.
During the Speech of The Guest of Honor the Vice Mayor in Charge of social affairs sensitize people to focus on hygien because this one is very important to have a good health,
He pointed habitant spaces, work spaces, body etc hygien these are the characteristics of ideal Rwandan and people of Gakenke District especially,
This week lunching ceremony was closed by thanksgiving of everyone who have had speech to everybody who attend this ceremony,
Even if the season 2012A has been characterized by many pests as stark bores on Maize crop and heavy rain which caused damages in some areas as wetlands; the interview with in charge of Agriculture in Gakenke District detailed that the yield will not be significantly affected.

On December 14th, 2011, Honorable Pelagie Uwamariya (MP) conducted closing ceremonies of Civic Education trainings known as “Itorero” in Nemba Sector. The trainings grouped Secondary School graduates at Nemba Site.
The Guest of Honor was accompanied by Mr Deo Kabagambe, the Executive Secretary of the Northern Province, and Mrs. Bernadette Mukamana, representing the National Commission for Unity and Reconciliation, at this event.
In her speech, Honorable Pelagie Uwamariya, emphasized on the role of youth in the fight against genocide ideology and told them to be united which leads to the Development.
The Executive Secretary of the Northern Province asked the youth to be innovative and proactive everywhere they are; to study with zeal and prepare their future and to have a good vision avoiding divisionism because the Country is proud of them.
The Mayor of Gakenke, Mr Deogratias Nzamwita recalled the youth to avoid drug abuse and vagrancy for a better behavior change.
Among 1003 youth expected at Nemba,Rushashiand Janja Site, only 960 (458 females and 502 boys) attended.
The Governor of the Northern Province Mr. Aimee Bosenibamwe paid a visit to civic educational high school leavers (Intore) yesterday evening on Dec. 11, 2011 in Nemba sector, Gakenke District .
Mr. Aimee Bosenibamwe , governor of the Northern Province in his speech appreciated morale of civic educational trainers and trainees. He indicated that Rwanda is trustworthy at the international arena. He reminded that Intore doesn’t wait for the country to be helpful to him/her conversely Intore must reflect on what he or she will be helpful to the nation.

On December 8th 2011, WEACS (Wakala East Africa Consulting Services) completed trainings to farmers representing selected farmers’ cooperatives in Gakenke. The trainings aimed to build the capacity of the farmers.
The participants benefited trainings in ways of caring for maize production by avoiding losses during the harvest, which contribute to the market satisfaction both in quantity and in best prices. Mr Patrick Karangwa, expert in maize production caring reminded to the participant, the kind and characteristics of the corn to harvest, and the consequences of harvesting dry corn.
Mr Karangwa continued by reminding how to harvest the corn and different tasks to be carried out, and the best ways in which corns are dried.
The Farmers’ representatives will receive small machines to shell and other to seal the corns’ bags and the farmers will pay MINAGRI in installments.

On December 6th, 2011 a hygiene and sanitation meeting was held in Gakenke District main room.
Were invited: The Directors of Districts Hospitals, the I/C of Community Health Workers activities at Hospitals and Health Centers levels, the I/C of Social Affairs in the Sectors and the I/C of hygiene at the Health Centers.
While opening the meeting, Mr Deogratias NZAMWITA, the Mayor of Gakenke District, thanked the participants and recommended them to emphasize on hygiene which seems in decline. He enlightened the low level of hygiene by examples of some personal hygiene, wearing of shoes, some families without latrines, lack of food hygiene and other unclear households around the District. readmore
Entrepreneurs and the district have entered into partnership agreement today on Nov. 28, 2011 with a view to strengthening the district private sector federation and contributing to achieving the district’s goals.
Abatoni Betty, representive of the chairman of the Private Sector Federation at the national level stressed that this exercice kicked off in Gakenke District and it will continue in other districts of the Northern Province. She called for entrepreneurs along with the district to act in concert so as to make headway.
Dukuzumuremyi Viateur, chairman of the Private Sector Federation in Gakenke District pointed out that the collaboration between the entrepreneurs and the district will enable them to achieve the district’s performance of contract.

on Nov. 23, 2011 there have officially launched the exercice of coffee planting in Coko Sector, Gakenke District 22,500 coffee trees were planted on nine hectares.
Mr. Aime Bosenibamwe, Governor of Northern Province called upon coffee growers to expand coffee arable land up to eighty per cent and care for coffee so as to earn a bumper harvest. He recalled the citizens to utilize coffee proceeds well by saving in SACCO Umurenge in a bid to lay aside for coming days.
Mr. Bosenibamwe Aime said that doing outstanding deeds transforms Rwandans’ welfare and it’s pride of our country.
Dr. Gatarayiha Celestin, Director in charge of coffee in the National Agriculture Exports Board (NAEB) called upon coffee growers to use chemical fertilizers so as to boost up agricultural produce. more

On 19th November 2011 in Gakenke District has stated afforestation programme; the Topic for this year is;" Forests, the foundation of sustainable development" This year, Gakenke District has prepared 2,400,000 seedlings of forestry trees, agroforestry trees, and fruits trees; all of them, will be planted on hillsides, roadsides, sites with radical terraces, river and in same farm land with crops, all this to enhance forest cover from 21,5% ( current situation is 15584,6ha) to 30% of the total area of the District as mentioned in Vision 2020 document; Among these 2,400,000 produced seedlings, 1,430,000 have been produced by PAPSTA project and other seedlings produced in different cell which equal to 970000 seedlings in 10000 seedlings by cell programme; readmore
On Nov. 16, 2011 Rwanda Agriculture Board gave eight motorbikes to sectorial pastoral officers in Gakenke District.
RAB Deputy-Chairperson in charge of husbandry, Ms. Christine Kanyandekwe noted that this program of donating motorcycles is designed to increase capacities to sectorial animal husbandry officers so as to have access to far-flung areas.
She went ahead saying that those motos will help them nurse residents’cattle in outlying regions, foster Girinka cows and inseminate them timely.
Ms. Claire Mukayigana the Representative of sectorial animal husdandry officers in great excitement stressed that they got key materials which will enable them to boost dairy produce and fine-tune husbandry in Gakenke District. The policemen operating in Gakenke District in partnership with residents planted trees on Museke hill in Gakenke Sector on Wednesday Nov. 16, 2011. During that exercice, over six thousand trees were planted on 3,5 hectares area.
Willy Marcel Higiro, the Chief of the Police in Gakenke District stressed that this activity will go on planting trees on twenty hectares area in a bid to implement the National Police performance contract of planting trees on three hundred hectares area nationwide. The competitions of the Ombudsman Office in Gakenke District took place on November 8, 2011 saw highly-talented poets and singers.
Two teenagers girls, 11, named Joyeuse Ikuzwe and Josiane Murekatete emerged top scorers in poetic section with fifty thousand under their belt. A young guy whose name is Jean pierre Nsengayire, 21, took the lead in artistic field and scooped seventy thousand. Readmore
Officer in charge of water and energy in Gakenke District, Mr. Epimaque Ntirenganya said a perception on biogas has improved since about fifty people are in the process of applying for bank loans designed to build biogas stove.
According to Mr. Epimaque Ntirenganya, there are still some hindrances. Some entrepreneurs get money and leave biogas work unfinished. Last year, the entrepreneur didn’t complete five biogas stoves in Coko Sector.
Another problem is that a resident has not involved in management of the bank loan for biogas construction and subsidies given by government. Readmore
Traditional health practitioners from Gakenke and Rulindo Districts received a two-day training on November 3, 2011 organized by AGA Rwanda Network.
Participants were trained on how to process medicines and the right time to search for them. Mr. Dieudonné Twambazimana, chairman of AGA Rwanda Network in Western province requested traditional health practitioners to take care of hygiene and sanitation. He reminded the participants to follow the instructions of the Ministry of Health in their daily activities.

On November 1st, 2011 the authorities of Gakenke had a meeting with all traders operating in Gakenke Center. The meeting aimed to renew their buildings and to be involved in the security of the Center. The Gakenke Vice-Mayor in Charge of Social Affairs, Mr Zephylin NTAKIRUTIMANA, said that the commercial center of GAKENKE is dirty. He insisted on the new painting of walls, ceilings and roofs, but also to plant ornamental trees and gardens in front of their buildings

On October 29, 2011 the week of the family was officially closed all around the country. In Gakenke District, Gakenke Sector particularly, the week was marked by communal work commonly known as ‘Umuganda” designed to rehabilitate the feeder road and donate 18 cows.
In that ceremony, Executive secretary of Gakenke Sector, Mr.Evergiste Gasasa said that 12 mattresses and various materials were given to “Abasigajwe inyuma n’amateka” community. He further explained that health insurance dubbed “mutuelle de Santé” is hovering at 57 per cent and stressed on family planning.
Donatille NIZEYIMANA, resident of Cyabingo Sector delivered testimony about the way she managed to emerge from poverty by starting from scratch like sorghum brew jerry can and she owned a house and a motorcycle. She plans to buy a car down the road. Readmore

At the opening of the event, Hon. Devotha Uwamariya who was the Guest of honor said that the Open day is for all Gakenke residents to enable them get ideas and achievements which can help in the development.

Gakenke (Northern Province) - Remains of the Victims of Genocide decently buried
September, 23rd 2011, Residents of Buli sector- Gakenke District in the Northern Province carried out a decent burial of one hundred and ninety eight (198) remains of the bodies of genocide victims in the new memorial site built by Buli sector. Among these, one hundred eighty two (182) bodies were brought from where they were buried before but not in a good way and the remaining sixteen bodies (16) were got from different places where they were thrown and all the bodies were put in five caskets.
